Dear Colleagues,

Warm greetings from the Executive Committee to you all and we would like to wish you all a successful and fulfilling new school year. In this newsletter, we would like to update you about the latest news of HKAHSS.

1. Membership Drive
We are very happy to share with you that we have a total of 489 members in 2021-2022 which is a new record of HKAHSS. Thank you so much for your unfailing support.

Our annual membership drive is now under way. For new principals who are not members yet, you are cordially invited to join us as new members. For old members, we are grateful for your continuing support in the past and look forward to having you again as our active and enthusiastic members. Besides, we also value the participation of vice principals, assistant principals, retired principals and former principals very much in our Association. Please encourage and support them of your school to join us.

To subscribe, please fill out the relevant membership form, Full/Associate Member or Life/Affiliated Member, which can also be found on the Association website, and return it together with a cheque to Mr. Cheng Kai-lam Joe, our Hon. Treasurer. We sincerely appeal to your support.

2. Happy Hour Forum: Recent Trends in Assessment & Survey on ApL
We are organizing a Happy Hour Forum themed “Recent Trends in Assessment & Survey on ApL” on 20 October 2022 (Thursday) afternoon at SKH Saint Mary Church Mok Hing Yiu College.  Besides sharing the findings on the Survey on Applied Learning (ApL), we are pleased to have invited Professor Wei Xiangdong, Secretary General, HKEAA, and Professor Ricardo Mak King-sang, Director – Public Examinations, HKEAA, to share with us the new trends of assessment.  It would be a good opportunity for us to hear from one another and share enriching insights.  For more details and enrolment, Please click on this Link  and register by 13 October 2022 (Thursday).

According to our Constitution, the Executive Committee shall consist of 9 elected members. On the day of the AGM (1st December 2022), the three-year term office of the following 2 principals will expire. They are:

  1. Lin Chun-pong (Chairman)
  2. Wan Ka-kit Andy (Executive Committee Member)

Therefore, we need to nominate a total of 2 replacements. Please note that for those whose term of office expires, they can also be nominated for re-election.

The other serving Executive Committee members are:

  1. Chan Shin-kwan (Hon. Secretary)
  2. Cheng Kai-lam Joe(Hon. Treasurer)
  3. Cheng Kin-tak Samuel
  4. Lau Yiu-hung (Vice Chairman)

The Executive Committee can co-opt up to a maximum of 6 members for a period of one year. Co-opted members in 2021-2022 are:

  4. Li Chi-lam Gary

We urge you to send in your nominations by filling out the nomination form. Members are reminded to obtain the consent of the nominee(s) before returning the form. To avoid last-minute confusion, nomination from the floor during the AGM is discouraged.

4. HKAHSS’s Recommendation for the Chief Executive Policy Address 2022
The Executive Committee sent a letter to the Chief Executive, Mr. Lee Ka-chiu John, to express our views and suggestions in the education sector on the coming Policy Address. The issues we raised for the government’s consideration include:

  • Capitalizing the drop in student population into opportunity for the development of quality education
  • Creating facilitative environment for a healthy school campus
  • Respecting Teachers’ profession and attracting talents to join the teaching force

5. Self-Regulated Learning
The HKAHSS has been promoting Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) since 2012. Over the past decade, we have been working with many schools as a learning community to enhance the learning and teaching effectiveness of SRL. In this academic year, we are launching a new initiative to network the SRL schools under “Self-Regulated Learning Schools Charter”. We are happy to announce that 23 schools have joined the Charter in 2022-2023. They are:

6. Staff Professional Development Service 2022-23
Understanding that Staff Professional Development plays an important role in bringing about quality education, we are introducing to you our new “Staff Professional Development Service” in which we will help conduct staff professional development programmes, seminars or workshops on various topics. 7. Gathering for Newly Appointed Principals
Thank you for the support of many newly appointed principals, the gathering was successfully held on 22nd September 2022 afternoon at Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School. In the gathering, new principals learned more about the HKAHSS as well as our work. We also got to know one and other better after the group discussion and a close supporting network was therefore built. We look forward to seeing you all in our next event
8. Meeting with Secretary for Education
Our Executive Committee met Dr Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education, on 21 September 2022.  Other than sharing the recent development of HKAHSS, we also discussed the following issues with Dr Choi: student population and quality education, healthy campus, opportunities for tertiary education and university admission, technology and education, and teachers’ professionalism.  More details will be shared during the AGM on 1 December 2022.
