2023/2024 Newsletter No. 1

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings! On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to extend warm regards and wishes for a healthy and fruitful year ahead.  May 2024 be filled with rewarding experiences, professional growth, and meaningful connections with your colleagues and students.  Let’s begin the new year with the following promising report:

1.Annual General Meeting 2023
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2023 was held on 7th December, 2023.  The President of the Education University of Hong Kong, Professor John Lee Chi-kin, JP, and the Acting Secretary for Education, Mr. Jeff Sze Chun-fai, JP, served as our keynote speakers.  In their keynote speeches titled “From Surviving to Thriving: Seizing Education Opportunities in the Post-Pandemic Era” (從疫境求生到疫後求勝:把握後疫情的教育機遇), they shared with us the latest education trends from various perspectives.  Both speakers invited participants to contemplate the opportunities that educators have in reshaping teaching methods and meeting the evolving learning needs. They discussed various topics, ranging from coping strategies recommended by UNESCO and suggestions from NEA in the States to the concept of spiritual leadership proposed by scholars from different countries and the implementation of entrepreneurship pedagogy in the dynamic VULCA world.  Mr. Michael Wong Wai-yu’s closing remarks challenged everyone to concentrate on the types of talents we aspire to nurture.  The Annual General Meeting was well attended and received, and we are thankful for your continued support.

  1. Adaptive Learning Platform (ALP)
In July 2019, with the generous sponsorship from the WYNG Foundation, we incubated an Adaptive Learning Platform (ALP) on Mathematics (S.4 – S.6).

The Platform officially launched for trial in September 2023 has the following features:

    1. It is multifunctional. It can serve as a self-studying platform, a teaching & learning platform and an assessment platform.
    2. Artificial Intelligence will be applied.
    3. Gamification will be an important feature.
    4. Social Learning will be encouraged through the system.
    5. Intelligent Tutoring will be provided in the system.

The Executive Committee has also resolved that the Platform should be taken over by a separate and independent entity.  The proposal would greatly facilitate division of labour, specialization and a good development path both for HKAHSS and the new entity.

The new entity, formally established and registered with the Government in October 2023, is the Hong Kong Education Podium Limited (HKEdP).  A resolution was adopted at our Annual General Meeting on 7th December, 2023 that the HKAHSS would transfer the Platform to the HKEdP with a signed agreement of mutual understanding but no monetary transactions.

  1. Self-Regulated Learning (SRL)

7.1  SRL Festival and Joint School Teacher Development Day

This year, the “Open-class sessions” are held from November 2023 to April 2024, offering more learning opportunities for teachers.  A key event to look forward to is the SRL Festival, scheduled on 2nd February, 2024 (Friday), at Po Kok Secondary School.  The Festival will revolve around the theme of “New Partners of Self-Regulated Learning: Open Data and AI Technology” (自主學習新夥伴:開放數據及人工智能技術).  We are honored to have Professor Erwin Huang (黃岳永教授), Adjunct Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, as our keynote speaker for the event.

7.2  Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) – SRL Schools Charter Scheme 2023-2025

We launched the “SRL Schools Charter” initiative in 2022/23, connecting 23 schools to promote SRL.  Excitingly, the second phase of this scheme will run from December 2023 to August 2025, expanding the SRL network and fostering high-quality education.  Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of building a culture of quality teaching together.  For more details and enrollment, please click HERE.
