Dear Members,

Warm greetings from the Executive Committee to you all and we hope you are doing fine and have a successful new school year under COVID-19! We would like to update you about the latest news of HKAHSS. Please take a break and read.

1. Survey: Student Withdrawal from School and Teacher Turnover (HKAHSS & HKCISA, CUHK)
Enhancing professionalism has always been the mission of HKAHSS and student welfare is our top priority. The recent phenomenon of student withdrawal from school and teacher turnover has sparked social concerns. Last November, the HKAHSS conducted the first survey on the issue and a summary of the results was sent to member schools. Due to the far-reaching impact of the issue, the HKAHSS and the Hong Kong Centre for International Student Assessment (HKCISA) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) are co-organising a survey on “Student Withdrawal from School and Teacher Turnover”. The survey aims to collect data to facilitate discussions between the education sector and the government, so strategies can be devised in time to handle the situation, and stable development of schools and our education system can be enhanced. The present survey is apolitical and merely hopes to explore education issues from an education perspective. You should have received an email from the HKCISA on 24 September. Please complete the online survey by 25 October 2021 (Monday). We are going to present the initial findings of the survey during our Annual General Meeting on 1 December 2021 (Wednesday). For enquiry, please call 5505 9911 or email cplin@hlc.edu.hk. Thank you very much for your support.

4. Happy Hour Forum: Building Resilience in the Face of Change
It has been a while since we last had a chance to meet and share our views on educational issues among Secondary School Principals. Due to the recent change of education policies and environment, we, School Principals, are experiencing different challenges. The HKAHSS is very willing to accompany each other.

The HKAHSS is organizing a Happy Hour Forum themed “Building Resilience in the Face of Change” on 4 November 2021 (4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.) at Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School. This provides an opportunity for us to brainstorm ideas regarding Staff Deployment, Staff Development, and Sustainability of Principals and Vice-principals under the current circumstances for effective school management and future school development. You are sincerely invited to join our Happy Hour Forum. To enroll, please click HERE and complete the form by 1 November 2021. All Principals and Vice-principals are welcomed.

5. Self-Regulated Learning (SRL)
The HKAHSS has been promoting Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) since 2012. Throughout these years, more and more schools have been joining us in exploring how to enhance the learning and teaching effectiveness with the implementation of SRL.

To further facilitate exchanges of experience and strategies and to inspire each other in planning the way ahead, a sharing session on “Leadership Strategies on Promoting Self-Regulated Learning 2021” has been rescheduled to be held on 29 October 2021 (3:00-5:15p.m.). Let’s learn and work together to promote SRL in Hong Kong.

SRL Festival 2021-22 has been scheduled between November 2021 and January 2022. A total of 109 open classes will be offered by 19 schools. The peer lesson observation and post-observation sharing would certainly provide good learning opportunities for professional growth. You and your teachers are cordially invited to join this Festival. For details, please click HERE.

6. Tea Gathering for Newly-appointed Principals (NAPs)
The tea gathering for NAPs was held in the afternoon on 24 September (Friday) at Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School. 25 NAPs participated in the event. In the gathering, participants had very good time mingling with one another and shared issues of common concerns such as face-to-face class arrangements, human resources management, curriculum updates and values education. It is much hoped that NAPs are well supported with our good wishes and encouragement.
7. Meeting Heads of Universities Committee (HUCOM)
Our Executive Committee met the Heads of Universities Committee (HUCOM) on 18 October 2021 (Monday). The meeting was very fruitful. Other than sharing the recent development of HKAHSS, we also discussed the following issues with HUCOM: University Admission (School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS), Applied Learning and General Entrance Requirements), Suggestions to Better Equip Our Students for University Education and Future Collaboration with Secondary Schools. More details will be shared during the AGM on 1 December 2021 (Wednesday).
8. Collection of Views and Suggestions for the Chief Executive Candidate(s) for the 2022 CE Election
The next election of the Chief Executive is round the corner. To upkeep our proactive efforts in submitting proposals to the Chief Executive’s annual Policy Address and in the last round of CE election in 2017, the Executive Committee is now gathering our thoughts on education-related issues for the consideration of the candidate(s). We sincerely invite you to join us in this meaningful engagement. Please send us your views and suggestions through e-mail at 2022ce@hkahss.edu.hk on or before 31 December 2021 (Friday).
