Dear Members,
The start of a new academic year brings fresh opportunities to learn, lead, and inspire. The HKAHSS Executive Committee wishes all members a successful term ahead.
In this Newsletter, we are pleased to share the latest news, initiatives, and resources from our association to support your professional journey and enrich student learning.
1. Membership Drive
We are pleased to share that HKAHSS has 463 members for the 2025-2026 year. Thank you for your steadfast support.
Our annual membership drive is underway, and we are excited to grow our community. We extend a special invitation to new principals to join us and benefit from the collective strength of the HKAHSS. For our returning members, we greatly appreciate your ongoing commitment and look forward to your involvement this year. We also value the participation of vice principals, assistant principals, retired principals, and former principals in our Association. Please encourage your colleagues to get involved.
To subscribe, please complete the relevant membership form (Full/Associate Member or Life/Affiliated Member), available on our Association website. Once completed, kindly return the form along with a cheque to Mr. Wan Ka Kit, Andy, our Hon. Treasurer.
2. Annual General Meeting 2026 & Election (1/12)
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place at the Headquarter of Preface at Shop G07, G/F, Tower 535, 535 Jaffe Road, Causeway Bay on 1st December, Tuesday from 2p.m. to 5p.m.
In addition to the formal AGM agenda, members will have the valuable opportunity to visit Preface, an innovative AI-driven education company dedicated to reimagining learning through technology, data, and personalised learning solutions. We are especially honoured to welcome Mr. Tommie Lo(盧炳棠先生), Founder and CEO of Preface, and Dr. Alfred Tse (謝世杰博士), Co-founder and Executive Director of Preface, who will deliver a keynote speech titled “Leadership: Managing Change in the Era of AI”. Through their sharing, members will gain insights into the evolving role of leadership in times of rapid technological advancement, as well as practical perspectives on how organisations and schools can adapt, innovate, and lead change with confidence. We sincerely invite all members to join us for an engaging and inspiring afternoon of learning, connection, and professional dialogue. According to our Constitution, the Executive Committee shall consist of 9 elected members.
On the day of the AGM (1st December 2026), the three-year term office of the following 3 principals will expire. They are:

Ms. Chan Shin-kwan (Hon. Secretary)
Mr. Mak Man-chiu (Executive Committee Member)
Moreover, the following 2 principals with the remaining one-year term office have already retired on 1 September 2026. They are:
Dr. Lau Yiu Hung (Vice Chairman)
Ms. Chan Shuk-man Ella (Executive Committee Member)
Therefore, we need to nominate a total of 5 replacements. Please note that for those whose term of office expires, they can also be nominated for re-election.

We encourage you to submit your nominations via the Nomination Form by 31st October 2026. Please ensure you obtain the nominee’s consent before submitting, and kindly note that nominations from the floor during the AGM are discouraged to avoid last-minute confusion.

3. Invitation to Join the “Buddy-Prof E” AI Project (Year 1): Founding Schools 2026/27
Following a highly successful Pilot Phase (Year 0) in 2025/26—which saw over 30 participating schools—we are excited to expand this initiative to help students develop reflective and independent learning skills across academics, life planning, and life-wide learning.
About Professor E
Developed by Professor Erwin Huang (黃岳永教授) and his team at HKUST, Professor E was originally designed for university students. It has since been spun off into a new EdTech startup, Reflecting Labs. We are now bringing this innovative platform to secondary schools as both a Student AI Learning Buddy and a powerful Reflection Tool. Professor E helps students build reflective and independent learning skills that extend across academics, life planning, and life-wide learning.
Professor E utilizes a technological model to automatically generate School Reports and Individual Growth Profiles upon completion of learning activities. The profile would incorporate two objective assessment frameworks: MBTI Personality Trait Analysis, and the ROCKS Model, which evaluates students’ Reflection, Ownership, Critical Thinking, Seek for Purpose, and Self-Identity.
The Year 1 “Buddy-Prof E” AI Project would support the following:
- Study Trips Reflection: S4-S5 CS Trips or any S1-S6 Study Trips
- Goal Setting & Reflection: S1-S6
- Life Planning: S3 Subject Selection, S4-6 University Course Selection & Career Planning
- Service Learning Reflection: S1-S6
- Subject-based Reflection: S1-S6
We warmly encourage your school to join this Year 1 initiative from October 2026 to August 2027. A service charge of HK$20,000 will be contributed by each participating school to the service provider, Reflecting Labs, to facilitate the project administration, including operations, user support and training, AI tokens, cloud servers, development, and customisations.

5. SRL Festival 2026/27
The SRL Festival 2026/27 is strategically organized into two distinct rounds of Open Classes, fostering a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. The 2 rounds will occur during the periods of:
- November 2026 to January 2027, and
- February to May 2027.
Teachers are warmly encouraged to actively participate in this enriching festival. We extend a special invitation to teachers urging them to voluntarily open their classes for peer observation and engage in post-observation discussions. Such participation is instrumental in cultivating professional growth and facilitating the exchange of pedagogical practices.

Additionally, the Joint-school Professional Development Day is scheduled for 29th January 2027 (Friday) at SKH Holy Trinity Church Secondary School. The theme will be “Digital Empowerment: Transforming Learning and Teaching” (數字賦能‧智啟學教), which underscores the integration of artificial intelligence into daily teaching or pedagogies, for all schools and all students. We warmly invite you and your colleagues to join this Annual Professional Development Day, designed to foster collaborative growth and innovation within the educational community. Comprehensive details regarding this event will be disseminated in November 2026.
6. Newly Appointed Principals’ (NAPs) Gathering (24/9)
The HKAHSS will host a welcoming gathering for all Newly Appointed Principals (NAPs) this September. We look forward to providing a platform for introductions and community building.

7. Happy Hour Forum (23/10)
To address the increasingly complex legal and governance challenges faced by school leaders, the Hong Kong Education Podium (HKEdP) and the HKAHSS will jointly organize a professional legal forum titled “Analyzing Legal Risks and Responses in School Governance”. The forum aims to enhance school leaders’ awareness of legal risk management and provide practical guidance on issues such as employment contracts, personal injury negligence claims, procurement and tendering procedures, and the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Ordinance.

The forum seeks to equip school leaders with the legal knowledge and practical strategies needed to strengthen school governance, enhance compliance, and mitigate legal risks in a rapidly evolving educational environment.

8. Staff Professional Development Services 2026/27
One of HKAHSS’s primary goals is to enhance the professionalism of HK educators. We are delighted to introduce the ”2026/27 Staff Professional Development Service”, continuing the success of our previous initiatives. The HKAHSS remains dedicated to empowering schools with high-quality professional development through engaging seminars and workshops.
In 2026/27, the staff professional development programmes, seminars, or workshops covers 31 topics in 6 different areas:

9. HKAHSS Recommendation for the Chief Executive Policy Address 2026
It has been our annual practice to send a letter to the Chief Executive, Mr. John KC Lee, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM, to share our views and suggestions regarding the education sector in the upcoming Policy Address.
We suggest to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international education hub while enhancing the quality, sustainability, and competitiveness of basic education. Key proposals include establishing stable long-term funding for digital education, expanding AI-enabled learning and teaching, strengthening teacher professional development, and promoting Hong Kong-branded international competitions and study programmes.
To address the decline in the school-age population, the HKAHSS advocates a five-year Secondary One transition pilot with smaller class sizes, improved population forecasting, more flexible resource allocation, better utilisation of school premises, and greater flexibility in medium-of-instruction arrangements.
The HKAHSS also recommends reviewing university admissions policies to safeguard opportunities for local students. Through stronger digital education, smoother primary-secondary transition, and strategic long-term planning, Hong Kong can enhance curriculum quality, student learning outcomes, and school innovation while further advancing the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.
